Creative Sessions #3: A chat with NÜWA

We’re already halfway through September and we can already see the Creative Sessions peeking from around the corner! This month’s a little interesting - we not only have one but two creative sessions!

We sat down with NÜWA founder Elaine Friedlander to find out more about their upcoming creative session and also to chat about how women can be empowered in the arts, cultural and creative industries even while they’re hustling against the odds.

WHAT THEY DO

NÜWA are a membership organisation that connects professionals in the creative, cultural and arts industries, while ensuring essential support for those who are freelancing in the industry.

They also have a subgroup that focuses on solely women who are involved in the creative hustling called ‘Women In Arts’.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THEIR CREATIVE SESSION

There will be a Supermarket Sweep, which is the first such activity they’ve done in all of their sharing sessions. This is where you’ll be given the opportunity to interact with the objects - which breaks that artificial barrier that exists between a customer and a product.

Elaine believes that we are naturally hesitant towards new objects – but the key is to engage with the item on all facets and critically think about it…kind of like in the 5Ws and 1H sense, if you will.

“It’s a supermarket sweep, but unfortunately, you won’t be able to take anything home,” Elaine quips.

But one thing she hopes that you can take home after her Creative Session — the thirst to find out what exactly it is that inspires you.

“People are influenced by their whole life and not just one little part of it,” Elaine shares in response to her motivation behind the theme of her upcoming creative session.

“…and perhaps with a feeling or a better connection to the things in the store and design in Singapore so that they feel that they’re a part of the conversation. That they feel they can also contribute and they can question, examine and discuss what has gone into these contemporaries in Singapore.”

Because in the words of Vincent Van Gogh, great things are done by a series of small things brought together.
