Creative Sessions Overview
Title of Program: "&" with Mary Bernadette Lee & Gladys in collaboration with the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF).
Through the Naiise Iconic x SGIFF collaboration, we hope to inspire our audiences by merging the worlds of film and craft. We’re excited to spotlight two of our local independent creatives — filmmaker Gladys Ng and artist Mary Bernadette Lee.
“&” explores the quiet uneasiness of first encounters and the delicate transition to what happens after.
Mary and Gladys will share their creative journeys, their inspirations, and how they translate their emotions to beauty in their respective art forms.
The hands-on session combines the worlds of Gladys Ng and Mary Bernadette, by taking cues from elements of film and turning it into art in whatever way, shape or form that inspires.
Building on the combination of layers, storytelling and mood-creation, Mary and Gladys would like to invite participants to pair up with each other to capture their individual interpretations of their first encounters.
Following a guided discussion, participants will exchange their own printed photographs with their partners to be illustrated on. The illustration adds another layer and dimension, furthering that encounter and hopefully, allowing strangers to make a new acquaintance.
About Gladys Ng:
Gladys Ng’s films reflect her nature, nuanced and subtle, interspersed with wry humour. My Father After Dinner was awarded Best Singapore Short Film at the 26th SGIFF, and the festival-commissioned short The Pursuit of a Happy Human Life opened the 27th edition. Her latest short, Still is Time, was in competition at Uppsala International Film Festival.
About Mary Bernadette Lee:
Mary Bernadette Lee is an artist, educator, illustrator. Her artistic practice takes the phenomenological approach investigating relationships between body, architecture and space, and psychological states relating to Self, Identity and Home. She collects people’s experiences through collaborations through artist-led programmes exploring an inquiry into relationships relating to Self, Identity, Community and Home.
