The idea of the books spawned from the author’s efforts to teach his 6-year-old nephew to speak basic Hokkien. He lovingly drew every image and coached the boy its equivalent Hokkien word. He hoped to improve the boy’s proficiency in the dialect so that the he could converse with his grandparents and great grandmother.
Utilising a back-to-basics approach, these books aim reconnect individuals with dialect as well as increase inter-generational interactions and bonding. In a broader context, they attempt to reclaim a part Singapore’s identity and heritage.
