Interns of Naiise III

Everyday at Naiise Headquarters, we are running around and getting things done like a bunch of busy bees, and we are really grateful for our interns who have helped us to be who are today.

Continuing our Interns of Naiise series (read Part I and Part II), here is the latest feature of Naiise Interns, the unsung heroes we are really fortunate to have.

Kai, The Ladies Man

How long have you been interning at Naiise?
I've been interning here for a bit over a month. 5 weeks.

What is your role?
I'm a Retail Operations intern.

Describe to us how your internship has been.
It's been very good. I took awhile to adapt at first... because I never had a job before. I really like it here because Naiise has given me opportunities to be at the stores to do retail, and outbounding of stocks to stores. I maintain stock integrity and I'm also helping to pilot another project with my team.

This internship has given me more experience than I expected in the short period of time. My mentor, Stella, knows what she wants to accomplish. She really guides me, and help me work to the best of my abilities. And she's good at trying to get the best out of people.

Tell us an unforgettable story at Naiise.
Definitely the company culture. Even though I'm an intern, there's no segregation between me and the rest of the company. One unforgettable memory is when Ash smashed his head on the wall while skating down a ramp. He skated down it and couldn’t shift his board on time, and ended up hitting the wall. It was pretty funny.

Shawn, The Penang Boy

How long have you been interning at Naiise?
How long did Kai say? One month. Ok, 4 weeks.

What is your role?
Business development. I'm working on expansion, and I do a lot of market research and location research.

I mean I just did the B2B kit. I thought all I had to do was come up with the content, but actually we had to revamp the whole content. Afterwards, we went to design and take our own shots, and the Photography team helped us. How is it like doing product styling? It's fun (see the nice photos on Instagram). I learnt about flatlay and grids too!
Day-to-day, I do a lot of research. For example: location analysis. You have to study each location properly. How the culture is like and see if it fits Naiise’s culture.

My mentor Siew Mei, is very kind. She empathises and understands, and never exactly pushes us for deadlines - unless it’s really necessary. She tried to push us for B2B kit but she lets us do at our own time and own target. Although she’s always busy, she is always willing to help.

For Dennis, he is a great guy *laughs*. He taught me something on my first interview. He always wants us to do the best and not just what's popular. He blanja (treat) us food that day, so he is just a really nice guy.

Tell us an unforgettable story at Naiise.
The environment is nothing I’ve seen before. I know other mentors out there don’t really care. But over here, they really care and help, regardless of departments. Everyone is willing to help. If people ask me what's so good about Naiise, I would say working with people with different backgrounds.

Ruimin, The Shy Mei Mei

How long have you been interning at Naiise?
Uh, one month and one week?

What is your role?
HR intern.

Describe to us how your internship has been.
So far I've been coming up with the benefits for office staff. For example, calculating your medical leaves, all the very dry stuff. We also do up the medical benefits and employee handbook - the stuff you guys get in the long run. I also looked at hiring avenues, recruitment strategies, ways to improve employee satisfaction and also the ways to retain employees.

I find retail shifts very interesting, as this is my first retail job, since I've only been in the F&B industry. We work on constant restocking and attending to customers.

My mentor Kang Le has been a great help. Although we haven't really talked much, he is definitely a very fun and great mentor. Despite his busy schedule, he will always help and guide us along the way.

Tell us an unforgettable story at Naiise.
The first time we went drinking. The first outing. We got to see everyone's personality outside of the office! (laughs) I liked Naiise because of the colleagues and working environment. They've definitely raised the bar for the type of company I would want to work with in the future and pushed away the 'bad internship' stories. We're given big tasks and a lot of trust, which allow us to explore a lot of things, and makes things easier to present to the boss.

Hsin Yee, The Giggly Chiropractor Wannabe

How long have you been interning at Naiise?
2 months.

What is your role?
I'm a Design intern.

Describe to us how your internship has been.
It's been very enjoyable. Coming from a Product Design background, I even told my lecturer that I wanted to convert from product design to graphic design. The difference is the applications that I use. I will work more on illustrator and photoshop and less 3D softwares, but graphic design is not as easy as it looks. Day to day, I work on graphics and recently, I helped out with the vending machine project, like designing the decals. I did two retail shifts and it was very interesting. I get to play around with the products and interact with the customers. It's pretty interesting because you get to experience different types of customers.

My mentor, Georgina, is a very friendly supervisor.  I had fun. She guided me, together with Ash. And I learnt a lot, simple things like leading and kerning, the clipping mask. Before coming to Naiise, I didn't know we could open more than one art board on Illustrator and doing decals to scale was hard.

Listening to Ash and Georgie bickering. Georgie will mispronounce words and he'll mock her by writing it down.  One of the more unforgettable moments would be the photoshoot session we had last week. It was really fun. It was a new experience - first time choosing products and doing the layout, definitely harder than it looks.

Dominic, The B-Boy

How long have you been interning at Naiise?
Two months? eh no? 1 month plus. 4 weeks.

What is your role?
Im a Newsletter intern.

Describe to us how your internship has been.
It's very nice and laid back. Something you think Google would be. On Mondays, we just brace for Tuesdays. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays we have our newsletter launches, so we have a pretty tight schedule.  I like how the newsletters have specific themes. For example, we've got pins and patches, fashion, baby clothes. So it's like we have new brands, and we work on the newsletter to launch so that it sells well. I also help out in design here and there, whenever people need it. That's the reason I came here. Naiise seemed very design-orientated. Other than that...so far I had one retail shift. It's good. Different from 'office life'. Retail is more of/kind of a break for me. It's a new environment, quite cool because I get to see the frontend and backend of what goes into this company.

My mentor Serene is like the coolest person ever. The way she thinks is very unconventional. She likes to fiddle with things, to get her creative juices flowing. She comes up with really good stuff, with the content and headlines for newsletter and copy. She's really good with words and definitely a go-to person for advice, for work mostly.

Tell us an unforgettable story at Naiise.
Playing soccer in the basement after work. Because it's like, after a pretty long day, when it finally comes to an end, we all go crazy and no one holds back.

What is one product you would recommend to your friends?
