To celebrate Singapore's National Symbols' 60th anniversary, we were invited by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) alongside four other unique collaborators to reimagine the significance of the symbols. We chose our National Anthem and as part of our design process, we went back to the beginning of the national anthem to find out more about the enigmatic Malay icon and composer Zubir Said himself.

"Di mana bumi dipijak, di situ langit dijunjung" (You should hold up the sky of the land you live) is a famous Malay proverb which was cited by Zubir Said, as an inspiration for Majulah Singapura. Using his original score with his handwritten lyrics, our designs were inspired by his philosophy that in order for the new to arrive, one must let go of the old in a manner that is respectful and appropriate. We contrasted his handwritten line "Majulah Singapura" with digital scans of the state colours and our interpretation of the stirring melody.
