The founder of Baréskin, Sabina Munshi bares it all with our latest online interview featuring her story on how she started the brand and what it takes to build a presence in the skincare scene!

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your journey to owning your own business/brand.
I had a sunkissed childhood in Sri Lanka where a piece of my heart still lives along with some of my best memories! I met my husband in the US and our love for travel took us places where I still draw inspiration from. Singapore is home now for me and my family and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The journey to where I am today with regards to owning a brand was an interesting one. Learning curves, hard work, trials and errors are all part and parcel of being a brand owner but the satisfaction of creating something from scratch is well worth it.
2. What is the first item you created? What was the story behind it?
When creating Baréskin it was very important to me to have products that are inclusive and works on varied skin types and textures across all ages and both genders. Our 100% organic Facial Elixir was my first product which is the simplest product in our range but the most effective given it’s purity and “clean” factor. I have been keeping a close eye on ingredient labels on skin care for longer than I can remember and knew what I did NOT want in a product. The Facial Elixir was my first Baréskin baby and I will always have a special affiliation to it.
3. What are some problems you have faced when creating a brand?
When creating a brand that you are truly passionate about, the hardest part is to find people to add to your team that are equally passionate and take the initiative to be forward thinking. Once you put together your dream team, it is magic. But to get there is a treacherous path!
4. What was the most heartwarming comment that you have received for your business?
Till date the comments that I receive about our products solving major skin ailments like rosacea, eczema and psoriasis really motivate me to keep our line simple yet effective. Another heartwarming compliment is when I see other mothers taking inspiration to follow their passion after seeing that it IS possible! Empowering other women is a cause that is very close to my heart because I know how hard my journey has been and if there is even the slightest way I can make it easier for another, I will do it with no holds barred!
5. How did you envision your brand in shaping the world around you?
The movement that I would love to be a part of and have the privilege of heading the dialogue in our brand ethos is - Dare to wear bare. Confidence that comes from being in your own skin, is priceless and that is what we are after. Wearing you skin bare is made possible by practicing self-love, which is the very DNA of our brand.
6. What is the greatest lesson you have learnt while building your business?
There is no substitute for hard work. No shortcuts and definitely no “over night” success. Do your part and put in your blood, sweat and tears and success will follow!
7. What wise words do you have for people who want to start their own business?
Stay consistent and live your brand! It is not easy to own a brand by any measure but it is the closest you will get to your dreams coming alive!
