Meet The Maker : Zee & Elle

We interviewed Zee & Elle, known for creating cakes for the dreamers and wanderlusters, those who dare to dream while welcoming ideas that are as creative as they are innovative. We believe in minimalism and originality away from the noise and crowd. Someone who buys from Zee & Elle is bold and adventurous, unafraid of wandering out of their comfort zone and doing so alone. He/she lives independent of people’s opinions, and away from the noise and clutter of today’s society.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your journey to owning your own business/brand.

Hello, we are Zee & Elle, a boutique cake shop in Singapore inspired by nature. We bake cakes for birthdays, celebrations, wedding anniversaries, and parties. We are a couple (while most people think we are run by two girls!), Zee's the baker, he's the one who loves baking and creating new designs and flavours, while Elle loves everything operations. We really to be honest stumbled right into this, we were baking because we love it, and our friends and family were so supportive, and from one to another, one to another, and we finally am where we are. "What a ride!" haha we always think to ourselves. The journey that Zee & Elle went through is portrayed by our wanderlust nature. We are huge lovers of nature and getting here and being able to keep spreading our love for nature and cakes through our bakes is so amazing.

2. What is the first item you created? What was the story behind it?

The first cake piece we created was a 3 tiered wedding cake. It was a daunting task as the client was looking for something that looks like  a flower piece that she was using for her wedding in a cake form, and she entrusted us fully with it! We drafted out a few designs but ultimately created the first floral piece wedding cake which from there on created our brand's slogan, 'Cakes inspired by nature'.

3. What are some problems you have faced when creating a brand?

Finding ourselves and what the brand stands for has been a journey of self discovery. Being able to be yourself yet bring something to others, is a struggle that I'm sure many entrepreneurs face. But really thankful for our ZE community for their years of support, especially those that have been with us since the start of our journey!

4. What was the most heartwarming comment that you have received for your business?

"We got our cake for our wedding then our baby's gender reveal, then our baby's 1st month, 1 year old, and now 2 years old!"

"Our kid specifically requested for your honey yuzu cake"

We create cakes that bring the family through generations and that excites us! It's amazing to be able to walk with people through all their milestones in life and watching them grow with Zee & Elle.

How did you envision your brand in shaping the world around you?

Everyone should get a chance to dream a little, live a little braver. We hope that our cake designs, which are inspired by lush botanicals and whimsical colours, can inspire others to wander more and dream a little bigger. That when others see our cakes, or taste them, it brings them to a place they never wandered to before, maybe a memory, or a taste profile, and we hope this memory stays with them and remind them to keep dreaming, keep wandering. There is always something that awaits us at the next corner.

6. What is the greatest lesson you have learnt while building your business?

We are all afraid of being the first one to step into the unknown, but only the bravest make it to the end of the unknown and set the path for others.

7. What wise words do you have for people who want to start their own business?

Go for it, because at least you tried.

8. How do you feel the Naiise Marketplace can help sellers with their business?

Naiise has been around for years, and we love the brand so much. It is our go-to for gifts all the time for our friends, and we really love how Singapore has a voice on its own for local artists through Naiise. Naiise would really help us reach out to more people and get more people to know about us, and what Singapore's local artists scene has to offer.
